Myanmar, located in Southeast Asia, is a country of remarkable ethnic, cultural, and geographical diversity. With a population of around 55 million, its people have shown enduring resilience in the face of long-standing challenges. In recent years, communities across the country have been significantly affected by widespread insecurity, displacement, and disruptions to essential services.
Alongside ongoing complex conflicts and humanitarian needs, Myanmar is highly exposed to natural hazards. Flooding, earthquakes, and extreme weather events such as cyclones continue to affect communities across the country, particularly those already living in vulnerable conditions. These risks have intensified in recent years, most notably with the devastating earthquakes in March 2025, which caused widespread damage and placed further strain on already fragile communities.
Since 2008, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has worked alongside communities and partners in Myanmar, supporting people in some of the most disadvantaged and underserved areas. The programme focuses on communities affected by displacement, poverty, disasters, and limited access to opportunities. Guided by a rights-based and people-centred approach, LWF collaborates closely with local partners to promote resilience, improve livelihoods, and ensure inclusive access to services such as education, protection, and sustainable development.
