In 2022, LWF Iraq formed a new partnership with Hariwan Organization, a local NGO, to expand programming into Al-Anbar Governorate. Through this partnership, 91 women accessed SGBV protection services and 28 improved their livelihoods.

LWF has been present in Iraq since 2014, supporting internally displaced people (IDPs), host communities and Syrian refugees. Initially, LWF implemented projects in the Kurdish Region of Iraq, which hosted the majority of IDPs. In 2018, LWF expanded its activities to the Nineveh Plains after its liberation from the Islamic State, working mainly through local partners. Priority populations include community members who remained and survived the ISIS occupation, IDPs who fled and remain displaced, and those who are now returning to their homes. LWF also supports Syrian refugees, and host community members.

"During my participation in PSS individual and group sessions, I realized that I am not alone. There are many other women facing the same mental health challenges. We were able to openly discuss our problems and learn from each other. The sessions helped us overcome problems and stress, and to feel positive and alive again."

Local voices, local actions

In Iraq, LWF World Service joined the PROSPECTS initiative, which brings together the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Children’s Fund (UNICEF), as well as the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation. LWF Iraq through trainers certified by ILO provided Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) and Financial Education (FE) trainings to youth from different community groups in Duhok and Ninewa governorates. The aim of these trainings is to develop the business skills for women and men, and subsequently, promote access to finance to develop their businesses through providing loans.
