In 2024, LWF Iraq, through its Women’s Community Centre, organized a recreational activity for a football champion at the Shekhan IDP camp.

LWF Iraq has been responding to the priorities of internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, returnees, and host communities since the conflict started in 2014. With the active conflict over and IDPs gradually moving back to their areas of origin, LWF Iraq is strengthening holistic programming, integrating a rights-based approach.

The program has been expanding its areas of operation, especially in GoI through local partners, in order to support returnees and host communities to rebuild their lives, while continuing to support IDPs, in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Empowering Youth Through Local Leadership and Climate Action

Through an integrated approach to social cohesion and climate change, LWF Iraq launched a transformative Leadership and Civic Initiative Ideas training for youth in Duhok. This initiative empowered young participants to become active agents of change within their communities by strengthening their leadership skills and civic awareness.

Youth-led climate action in Khanke, Duhok, boosting climate resilience and community spirit through tree planting, sustainable landscaping, and environmental education.

The training equipped youth with the tools to foster inclusive leadership, build effective teams, and promote environmental responsibility through green initiatives. Participants explored pressing local issues such as the challenges of social cohesion and the growing impact of climate change while developing community-led solutions rooted in the realities of Duhok.

Through interactive sessions, real-world case studies, and group discussions, youth leaders gained practical strategies to lead diverse communities with empathy, resilience, and vision. The program also provided guidance on proposal writing, project planning, and monitoring and evaluation—critical skills for implementing sustainable civic initiatives. At its core, this initiative reflects the belief that sustainable change begins when local voices are heard and empowered to take meaningful local actions.

“We don't work for communities; we work with them. Every project we implement is shaped by the voices, experiences, and priorities of the people we serve. By actively involving community members in the planning, execution, and evaluation of our work, we ensure that our efforts are not only effective but also culturally respectful and sustainable. This approach builds trust, strengthens local ownership, and ultimately leads to long-term impact.”
