LWF Kenya-Somalia Programme Integrates Approaches to Strengthen Education Systems in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Helping Children Develop Skills, Build Confidence and Shape a Brighter Future
The history of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Program in the East and Horn of Africa spans over two decades of delivering impactful services to refugees, internally displaced persons, returnees, and host communities across the region. Through well-managed projects in Education, Reception Centre Management, Protection and Social Cohesion, Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Livelihoods, and WASH, we have worked to reduce vulnerability, promote dignity, and build resilience. This work has been made possible through strong, trusted partnerships and accountable relationships with our donors, whose support continues to fund the diverse thematic areas we serve. In 2024, LWF attracted a total funding of €10,886,993, which enabled us to reach 232,080 people in Kenya and Somalia. Our services impacted 176,431 refugees (76%), 32,475 internally displaced persons (14%), 12,832 members of host communities (6%), and 10,342 returnees (4%).
Our commitment is not only to addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also invest in long-term development and peacebuilding. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to fostering resilience and achieving transformative change for the communities we serve.
“I never thought I would walk again after my spinal injury. Without proper care, I was confined to my home, dependent on family members to help with even the simplest tasks. I felt like my life had come to a standstill... “I can now move freely and return to the normal life I thought I had lost."

“Conflict doesn’t just happen, it comes from people forgetting important values like respecting life, allowing children to go to school, and letting go of harmful traditions like gender-based violence and female genital mutilation. Our goal is to bring back good values, especially now that Kakuma is home to people from many countries and cultures. Every culture has its own way of life, but for us to grow and live well together, we need peace and unity. LWF teaches these values because they help build strong communities and keep peace alive.”
