LWF South Sudan operates across multiple states (Central Equatoria (Juba), Eastern Equatoria (Magwi), Upper Nile (Maban), Jonglei (Panyagor) and Ruweng Administrative Area (Jamjang) to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and long-term development support to communities affected by conflict, displacement, and climate-induced crises. Our work integrates emergency response, Climate & Resilient Livelihoods, Quality services and Protection and social cohesion in partnership with communities, government institutions, and local civil societies.
Through a rights-based and gender-responsive approach, we empower individuals and build community resilience, with particular attention to women, children, youth, and persons with disabilities. In 2024, our programming has prioritised locally driven initiatives and strengthened collaboration with national and international partners under the humanitarian-development-peace nexus.
“After receiving five rounds of cash support from LWF, Achol Garang, a widowed mother of five displaced by floods, was able to feed her children properly, diversify meals, and restore hope. “I no longer worry about hunger. Our life has positively changed.”

Local voices, local actions
“When the floods came, we lost everything,” says Achol Garang, a mother of five in Jonglei. “But LWF came with tools and seeds. I farmed again. Now my children eat every day. We even sell some vegetables in the market.”
This recovery story, replicated across South Sudan, exemplifies LWF’s commitment to empowering communities to lead their recovery. In 2024, through targeted livelihood kits, community trainings, and follow-up visits, beneficiaries like Achol Garang rebuilt productive lives with dignity. Our local facilitators and field staff, drawn from the communities we serve, are key to this transformation. By embedding ownership into every response, we foster resilience that lasts.

"Humanitarian needs in South Sudan remained severe in 2024 due to conflict, climate shocks, displacement, communal fighting, cattle raiding and poverty. Women and children suffered the most. Despite global funding cuts and reduced donor support, we adapted strategies, strengthened partnerships, and stayed committed to delivering life-saving aid. This chapter highlights key achievements amid adversity."
